As we begin this new year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the importance of being "Bible people" and offer some practical steps to help us grow in our spiritual journey. On Sunday, we talked about how owning a Bible and being a Bible person are not the same. It's about engaging with God's Word in a way that transforms our lives and aligns us with His will. After all, followers of Jesus are Bible people.
1. Pick a Time, Place, and Plan
The first step in becoming a Bible person is to establish a consistent routine. Choose a specific time and place where you can focus on reading and meditating on Scripture. Whether it's early in the morning at your dining room table or during your lunch break in your car, having a dedicated time and place helps create a habit. Additionally, having a Bible reading plan can guide you through the Scriptures systematically, ensuring you cover a broad range of biblical teachings. Follow along with our current Bible Reading Plan in the Veritas Church App, pick up a bookmark from the Bookstore, or download it here.
2. Approach with Humility and Prayer
Before diving into the Word, take a moment to pray. Ask God to open your heart and mind to His teachings. Approach the Bible with humility, eager to learn and be transformed.
James 1:21 encourages us to "receive with meekness the implanted word." This posture of humility allows us to be receptive to God's guidance and correction.
3. Engage with the Text: Bible Dwelling and SOAP Method
There are various methods to engage deeply with Scripture. Two effective approaches are Bible dwelling and the SOAP method.
- Bible Dwelling: Read a passage multiple times, take small bites by focusing on a verse or phrase, chew it up by asking questions and making observations, digest it by reflecting on its impact on your life, and let it come out in prayer.
- SOAP Method: This stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. Read the passage, make observations about its meaning, apply it to your life, and conclude with prayer.
Both methods encourage you not just to read, but to meditate and apply God's Word to your daily life.
4. Write It Down
Jotting down your thoughts, observations, and prayers can be incredibly beneficial. It helps solidify what you've learned and provides a record of your spiritual growth over time. You don't need to write a novel—just a few sentences can capture the essence of what God is teaching you.
5. Evaluate and Adjust Your Rhythms
As we look back on the past year and ahead to the new one, it's a great time to evaluate our spiritual rhythms. Are there areas where you need to grow? Are there unhealthy habits that distract you from your walk with the Lord? Consider what changes you can make to prioritize your time in God's Word.
6. Commit to Community
Finally, remember that we are not on this journey alone. Engage with your church community, join a connection group, or find a Bible study partner. Sharing insights and challenges with others can provide encouragement and accountability.
Becoming a Bible person is about more than just reading the Bible—it's about letting God's Word shape and guide every aspect of our lives. As we commit to these practical steps, let's pray for God to mold us into mature disciples who are deeply rooted in His truth. Let's make this year a year of transformation through the power of God's Word. Together, let's be a church full of Bible people!
